Rationale

Privileged Access Workstations (PAWs) represent the highest security boundary in the client estate, serving as isolated consoles dedicated exclusively to Tier 0 directory administration (Active Directory Domain Controllers, PKI/AD CS, Identity Federation, and Directory Synchronization). If a PAW is compromised, the confidentiality and integrity of the entire Active Directory forest are compromised.

Authentication parameters, local credential caching, account lockout thresholds, Netlogon secure channel parameters, and interactive logon behaviors must be hardened to their absolute maximum thresholds:

Architectural Threat Vectors & Security Objectives

  1. Elimination of Cached Credentials: Disabling logon caching (CachedLogonsCount = 0) guarantees that dumped local registry hives yield zero cached administrative passwords.
  2. Offline Cracking Resistance: Enforcing a 20-character minimum password length for local accounts expands the keyspace to over 10^39 combinations, rendering offline GPU cracking impossible.
  3. Throttling Password Guessing & Spraying: Enforcing a strict 5-attempt lockout threshold with 30-minute lockout windows (and extending lockout enforcement to the built-in Administrator) stops automated brute force.
  4. Purging Legacy Authentication: Mandating LAN Manager Level 5 (NTLMv2 only) with 128-bit session security and blocking WDigest in-memory cleartext caching eliminates classic relay and LSASS extraction exploits.
  5. Physical Console Security: Requiring hardware Secure Attention Sequence (CTRL+ALT+DEL), hiding usernames on the lock screen, and automatically locking the session upon smart card removal secures unattended consoles against walk-by physical compromise.
  6. Secure Channel Integrity: Enforcing cryptographic signing, sealing, 128-bit strong session keys, and 30-day machine password rotation on the Netlogon secure channel protects domain communication from spoofing and ZeroLogon-style attacks.

Legacy Impact & Compatibility

  • Continuous Domain Connectivity Required: With cached logons disabled (CachedLogonsCount = 0), PAWs must have live network connectivity to an Active Directory Domain Controller to process user logons. Off-network logons will fail.
  • Administrative Lockout Handling: Repeatedly mistyping passwords on fallback local administrator accounts will trigger a 30-minute lockout. Documented procedures must exist for administrative unlocking via secondary Tier 0 consoles.
  • Smart Card Lifecycle: Administrators must carry their hardware tokens with them, as token removal instantly locks the desktop.
  • No Periodic Expiration: Eliminating arbitrary periodic password expirations minimizes weak incremental passwords, while immediate revocation protocols remain active for suspected compromise.
